Muni Court, Glendale Cemetery to honor veteran Lewis P. Buckley

AKRON– The Akron Municipal Court and the Glendale Cemetery will co-host an in-person tribute on today at 11:30 a.m. for Civil War Veteran Lewis P. Buckley.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Akron Municipal Court has hosted an event in November to honor a local veteran.
The ceremony will take place in the Civil War Memorial Chapel on the Glendale property followed by a walking tour of the cemetery.
Members of the press and public are welcome to attend the event taking place at 150 Glendale Ave. in Akron.
Lewis P. Buckley was a Civil War Union Army Officer. During the Civil War, Buckley was commissioned as captain and commander of Company G, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on April 22, 1861 at age 56. He was promoted to full major on May 29, 1861. He served until his regiment was mustered out on Aug. 27, 1861.
Buckley re-enlisted on August 31, 1861 as colonel and commander of the 29th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving in that capacity until forced to resign due to failing health on Jan. 26, 1863.
After returning to Akron, Buckley participated in Summit County military affairs through the end of the war. He died in 1868 and is buried in Glendale Cemetery. The G.A.R. Buckley Post Memorial is located near his grave.
Mark Perkins, a history enthusiast who is active with the Kent Civil War Society, will describe Buckley’s journey as a veteran.
Steven Kaut, Glendale Cemetery chief operating officer, will describe the importance of the Civil War Memorial Chapel. Kaut will also lead the walking tour.
The chapel is not heated, so please dress appropriately based on the day’s weather forecast.
Greeters will point guests in the proper direction for parking and entry into the Memorial Chapel upon arrival.
