Probate court amazed by generosity of local residents

Published: June 26, 2017

AKRON – Summit County residents used their spring cleaning to improve the lives of local seniors. With the help of volunteers, Summit County Probate Court collected and sorted about 12,000 pieces of clothing.

The much needed clothing went first to indigent wards of the court in long term care facilities. However, the outpouring of generosity allowed the court to provide as well to 25 more area agencies, including AMHA senior buildings, the Urban League, Snow Angels, Open M, Community Support Services and many more.  Some of the court’s volunteer Senior Visitors and Guardians were able to “shop” with their ward’s specific needs in mind.

“One of the most interesting by-products of this drive was how many people used it as a way to move past their grief for someone they had lost. They shared many of their stories,” said Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer. “The kindness of our community never ceases to amazing me. Thank you so much to all who gave.”

Excellent resources for those wanting to continue to give and for those in need can be found through Summit County Info Line by dialing 211 or calling 330-376-6660 or going to http://www.211summit.org for information on local community clothing donations and much more.

“Our organization gives away about 80 pieces of clothing a day and had nearly reached the bottom of the barrel,” said Traci Higginbottom-Williams of First Faith Development Corporation in Akron. “We were able to restock our closet and immediately provide for the needs of a family who were so very grateful.”

A list of area agencies and nursing homes that benefited from the drive include: Altercare of Cuyahoga Falls, Arbors of Fairlawn, Heritage of Hudson, Windsong Care Center, Arden Courts, Heritage of Hudson, Northfield Village Skilled Nursing, Pleasant View Health Care, Sapphire Health and Rehab, Summit Villa, Wyant Woods, Canal Pointe

Hickory Ridge, Wayside Farms, Seasons, OPEN M, Community Support Services/Madeline Park Residential Facility, AMHA Senior Buildings (3), Trinity United Church of Christ, Faith Development Corporation, Redeemer United Methodist Church, SNOW ANGELS, GOODWILL, Discovery Shop and Volunteer Guardian Program.
